Lonsdale Gallery has exciting programming planned for this year’s Art Toronto 2011. With a solo artist presentation space in our booth by Larry Kagan, a special project space installation by Amanda McCavour and artists represented in the Art Dealer’s Association of Canada  booth 1202, it will be a busy fair!

Larry Kagan’s sculptures use light and shadow as an active agent in the work. Kagan constructs abstract metal three dimension forms. Looking at a piece of Kagan’s sculptural work without interaction with light, the pieces look like modernist constructions. When activated by light, however, the cast shadows of the works create representational images.  This metaphysical transformation of the sculptures is confounding, leaving the viewer to question the relationships of forms from object to refraction.

Special Project Installation:

Amanda McCavour

Stand In For Home

Stand In for Home is a multi-layered fibre rendering based on the kitchen in a previous home of the artist. Through this piece McCavour explores the vulnerability of thread in relation to the home as both things feel temporary and fragile. The creation of the piece required the artist to re-visit, remember and re-create a space that was once familiar, replacing it with a stand in, a synthetic, re-created version of home. This project was produced with the support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.

In Grande Italia Neil Dankoff turns his lens to Italy in this new series of panoramic photographs of cities, coastal villages and their surrounding landscapes. Dankoff focuses on how cities in Italy adapt to the beauty of their natural surroundings. Capturing the unique relationship between city and nature, Dankoff strives to reveal the sublime majesty that is Italy. The compositions are shot with a constant consciousness of how light animates the architecture and landscape. Dankoff’s obsession with light, detail and clarity gives him the ability to capture such beautiful images.

Similar to Israel, the location of Dankoff’s last series of photos, Italy is also a country known for its strong connection between landscape and populace. Dankoff subcribes to this romantic tradition of landscape photography with a keen interest in locations that have a strong relationship to their history. Dankoff’s photographs of Italy have the ability to evoke nostalgia and to once again capture that unique relationship between a land and its people.

Hearts & Flowers
June 9 – July 10, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 9 from 7-10pm

This exhibition, spanning both floors of the gallery, will showcase two new bodies of work by Pedie Wolfond: Hearts and Flowers.

In “Flowers” Pedie has turned her painter’s eye to the lens to capture awe-inspiring images of flowers. Like her paintings, these images radiate with colour and light. Through these photographs, the artist is finding in nature that which she strives to paint – the ethereal and transformative power of colour fields.

“Hearts” is a celebration of Pedie Wolfond’s new publication “Find Your Heart: Book Two”. Pedie Wolfond’s heart paintings grew out a wish to see more love in the world. Using the icon of the heart, these paintings pulse with energy. We are attracted to the hearts by their message but brought into the work through the spirit they emit. In her introduction to Pedie’s book, author Dianne Collins put it best: “ This book is more than an extraordinary collection of paintings. It is an experience of transformation and unity, of light and love.”

In 2004 Pedie published “Find Your Heart” a beautiful book of her heart paintings juxtaposed with inspirational quotes about love. Now, the accumulation of heart paintings and quotes from the last six years has come together in another book, focusing on the healing and transcendental powers of friendship, love and charitable giving. It is in the spirit of these quotes that Pedie has partnered with hospitals to create installations of her hearts, that the healing power of the work could bring inspiration to patients and staff.

All proceeds from the sale of books will be donated to the Shilly Rosen Memorial Fund, to support research for Polycythemia. “I dedicate this book to my sister, Shilly Rosen, who gave me unconditional love and wonderful happy days. Her bravery in the face of adversity was extraordinary. She will always be in my heart.” -Pedie Wolfond

Black Garden by Osheen Harruthoonyan

Black Garden is a featured exhibition for the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival 2011. In this exhibition, Osheen Harruthooyan questions how land can be simultaneously imbued with the cultural history of a people as well as its neglect through the entitlement of those same cultures. Harruthoonyan employs landscapes that signify his own cultural history. Harruthoonyan’s optical and printing techniques merge foreground and background to create an otherworldly space.

Part of the Alternative Process Photography Symposium (A.P.P.S.)2011. A display of works by symposium speakers, each a master in their photography process; carbon, platinum, platinum over gum, tri-colour gum bichromate, digital ink jet, pinhole and more. This exhibition is a celebration of unique processes as revitalized by these artists.
